MacSaber 1.1: Attack of the Backlight
MacSaber 1.1 has been released, now with expanded 17″ PowerBook support and keyboard backlight effects. I invite you to take your very expensive laptop into a dark room and swing it around* for improved dramatic effect.
Download MacSaber 1.1.
*Don’t break your laptop, okay? If you do, don’t blame me.

I find it best to hold your screen with one hand while you swing it around. If only the Mac didn’t go to sleep when you shut the lid…

This new build fixes the SMS Error on my PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz. But I’ve noticed that the keyboard backlight effect now sometimes causes my keyboard backlight to “lock up” in the off position when I quit the application.

@chris: plug in the power supply and an external mouse. This should wake up your closed macbook. I am not sure if you also need to connect an external display.

[...] For the gimmicky fun side of things, I’ve been playing with MacSaber and ShadowBook with VirtueDesktops. The former is a ton of fun, and gets all sorts of oohs and ahhs from friends and coworkers. The latter is a different story. I originally tried out the new ALS functionality of VirtueDesktops alone, but it was very unstable, and rotated desktops for seemingly no reason at all. Then, I used it with ShadowBook, and it worked, but I had to check a checkbox on every launch to enable to desktop switching functionality. It was also another app to run, and gave varying results in various light conditions. In the end, I stopped using VirtueDesktops altogether, as the desktop model doesn’t seem to fit with the Mac model of application switching. Besides, with Exposé, all it takes is a hit of F11 to get to the desktop. It will be interesting to see how Spaces turns out in 10.5. [...]

I hadn’t heard about the update for the backlight, so when I tried it tonight on my 1 day old MBP, imagine my delight in seeing the keyboard flash. The best part is, I really don’t have to move it very much to get a huge result. Massive software, really.
Alan Turing would be proud?

MacSaber is great fun ! I would love to see you interface MacSaber with DarwiinRemote (the Wiimote has motion sensors and force feedback). Imagine the Jedi action with a Wiimote !

If you want to use your mac with the lid closed try an app called SleepLess. It’s great if you’re on a flight and want to just listen to music, or ….oh I don’t know…if you’re swinging you laptop around and don’t want the screen to fly off.
Just make sure to use is small doses.

[...] Shakin’ So, you’re using your laptop, and you’re burning a CD on the go. Wow, trendy you! Problem is, you forgot that moving the laptop whilst burning isn’t a good move. You might end up with a dead disk. Wrong! Disco is clever enough to realise when the laptop is moving too much to potentially interfere with the burning process, and shakes the window to warn you of this. Now that’s the sudden motion sensor being used for something sensible instead of making light saber noises! [...]
